Understanding Masonic Festivals
A Masonic Festival is a concerted fund-raising effort by a Province, usually spread over 5 or 6 years.
At our last Festival in 2019 (for the Grand Charity), the Brethren of Surrey excelled themselves, raising around £3.3 million in five years.
Masonic festivals, also referred to as Masonic charity festivals, serve as cornerstone events in the Freemasons’ charitable endeavours.
These festivals are organised a dedicated team who form a festival committee to oversee the event. Freemasons and their respective lodges and chapters, play a vital role in generating funds for numerous charitable causes throughout the United Kingdom and beyond.
Structure and Organisation
These festivals encompass a diverse range of fundraising activities, including:
- Formal charity dinners
- Black-tie galas
- Classical concerts
- Charitable auctions
- Prize draws and raffles
- Quizzes, BBQs, Abseiling
Such events may be orchestrated at different scales, from individual lodge and chapter functions to grand occasions involving lodges/chapters and the Provincial Grand Lodge of Surrey.
Charitable Focus
The proceeds from these festivals support an extensive array of worthy causes:
- Medical research and healthcare initiatives
- Educational programmes and bursaries
- Emergency disaster relief
- Community outreach services
- Support programmes for vulnerable individuals
- Family welfare schemes
These charitable activities exemplify the Freemasons’ foundational principle of providing assistance to those in need, whilst making meaningful contributions to society at large.
